Game Rundown: Lucas Stanfield was lights out for West Salem on Tuesday. He struck out 12 over 6 innings while allowing only 4 hits. His 3 earned runs came on an inside the park home run by Roseburg's Caden Johnson. Johnson hit a line drive to shallow center field and, after a diving attempt by Marshall Bray, the ball skipped to the wall allowing the two base runners and Johnson to score. Other than that small blemish, Stanfield's outing was superb and he moves to 2-0 on the year.
In his first action as a varsity pitcher sophomore Jackson Lowery pitched one inning of relief in the 7th to shut the door on Roseburg.
Offensively, West Salem was knocking on the door most of the game. In the first inning the Titans had the looks a big rally with runners on the corners and no outs. However, Roseburg was able to shut West down with a huge double play when they threw out Kyle Mitsuyasu at home on a Noah Juarez fly ball. West did finally break through in the bottom the 3rd inning, plating seven runs. The big blow came when Jackson Gatchet knocked in 3 runs on a bases loaded double. West had a number of innings with runners on, yet not turned out as productive at the seven run 3rd.
Inside the numbers: West is 1-0-1 at home this year. This was Roseburg's first game of the year, as they've been dealing with snow most of the preseason. 7 of the 9 Titan starters notched at least one hit. Kyle Mitsuyasu slammed three doubles on the day.
Players of note: Lucas Stanfield (6 IP, 12 K, 4 H, 3 ER), Kyle Mitsuyasu (4-4, 3 2B, 2 RBI), Tanner Keene (2-4, 3 RBI), Jackson Gatchet (1-4, 3 RBI)
Up next: West Salem travels to Barlow on Friday to play a non-league contest at 5 PM. The Titans will enter the game 2-1-1, while Barlow is 0-3.
