Game Rundown: Lucas Stanfield was lights out for West Salem on Tuesday. He struck out 12 over 6 innings while allowing only 4 hits. His 3 earned runs came on an inside the park home run by Roseburg's Caden Johnson. Johnson hit a line drive to shallow center field and, after a diving attempt by Marshall Bray, the ball skipped to the wall allowing the two base runners and Johnson to score. Other than that small blemish, Stanfield's outing was superb and he moves to 2-0 on the year. In his first action as a varsity pitcher sophomore Jackson Lowery pitched one inning of relief in the 7th to shut the door on Roseburg. Offensively, West Salem was knocking on the door most of the game. In the first inning the Titans had the looks a big rally with runners on the corners and no outs. However, Roseburg was able to shut West down with a huge double play when they threw out Kyle Mitsuyasu at home on a Noah Juarez fly ball. West did finally break through in the bottom the 3rd inning, plating seven runs. The big blow came when Jackson Gatchet knocked in 3 runs on a bases loaded double. West had a number of innings with runners on, yet not turned out as productive at the seven run 3rd. Inside the numbers: West is 1-0-1 at home this year. This was Roseburg's first game of the year, as they've been dealing with snow most of the preseason. 7 of the 9 Titan starters notched at least one hit. Kyle Mitsuyasu slammed three doubles on the day. Players of note: Lucas Stanfield (6 IP, 12 K, 4 H, 3 ER), Kyle Mitsuyasu (4-4, 3 2B, 2 RBI), Tanner Keene (2-4, 3 RBI), Jackson Gatchet (1-4, 3 RBI) Up next: West Salem travels to Barlow on Friday to play a non-league contest at 5 PM. The Titans will enter the game 2-1-1, while Barlow is 0-3. Box Score: Scio HS (03.16.2019)
Game Rundown: Hector Amador started on the hill for the Titans and certainly pitched well enough for the win, yielding only 2 earned runs over four innings. For most of the game it seemed like Amador would notch his first victory of the season. West Salem led South Medford 5-2 heading into the 7th inning, with the game seemingly in hand. However, in the top of the 7th South Medford tied the game 5-5, taking advantage of timely hitting and too many Titan mistakes in the field. With the game tied after 7, the two teams marched into extra innings. South Medford struck quickly in extras, scoring two in the top of the 8th. West was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning and that was that. Within the span of 2 innings West was outscored 5-0 and dropped their first game of the year. Inside the numbers: This was West's second extra inning game of the year. Even though the game was played at Scio High School, West was the home team. South Medford outhit West 16 to 6. This was a double header for South Medford, as they lost to South Salem prior to their match-up with West Players of note: Kyle Mitsuyasu (1-3, 1 run), Erik Swanson (1-3, runs), Marshall Bray (2-3, 1 RBI), Hector Amador (4 IP, 3 K, 2 ER) Up next: West (1-1-1) plays host to Roseburg (0-0) on Tuesday at 5 PM. This with be Roseburg's first game of the year. Box Score: West Salem HS (03.15.2019)
Game Rundown: The 2019 home opener for the Titans had a little bit of everything; extra inning, umpires calling the game early, back and forth action, lots of strikeouts, clutch hitting, you name it! For West, Braden Allison was a bulldog on the mound, allowing 3 runs over 7 innings while striking out 9. Central Catholic pitchers wouldn't be outdone, however, as Jackson Elder and Charlie Steuer combined to limit West to 3 runs while striking out 12. Overall, both teams' pitchers managed to hold the competing hitters in check, keeping the offensive damage to a minimum. Central Catholic struck first putting up one run in the top of the first, but West was quick to answer putting up one run of their own in the bottom of the second. For the most part, the game was a seesaw battle, with one team scoring and the other answering. With the Titans grasping a slim 3-2 lead in the 6th, Central Catholic managed to tie the game. With the score tied after seven innings, the match-up would move into extra inning. In the top of the 8th Central Catholic put up a big inning, taking the lead. Before West could bat in the bottom of the 8th, umpires made the decision to call the game because they felt it was too dark to continue. As in the previous game, because the last inning was not completed the score reverts to the last full inning, resulting in a 3-3 tie. Players of note: Tanner Keene (3-4, 1 RBI), Braden Allison (7 IP, 3 ER, 9 K) Inside the numbers: This was the second straight game for West called to darkness. This was the first extra inning game of the year for the Titans. Tanner Keene led all hitters with 3 base knocks. Braden Allison K'd 9 Central Catholic batters.
